Caring for Twins and Triplets

I would say about half of our clients are families with multiples. It is easy to see why these parents would need so much help.

The fact is that for many of them, trying to breastfeed - which means feeding two babies every 2 hours - requires a tremendous amount of time and energy. I suggest to mothers that are expecting multiples and desiring to breastfeed that they clear their calendar for the next few months after the birth of their babies, because breastfeeding is almost all they will be doing. We as doulas help these moms by doing everything else for them, i.e. changing the babies’ diapers, putting the babies to sleep and bathing them. We also take care of most of the household duties so the mother is free to care for her newborns. The greatest benefit of having a doula when you have multiples is that you can usually get a nap, and that means the world to a mom that has had many nights of interrupted sleep.

We try to suggest to a mom expecting multiples to try and plan ahead as much as possible for their doula care. I find that if you cannot have a doula every day, you should at least have one every other day; a night care doula is also a great option for mothers of multiples.
